Breaking Free From Passivity
“To this end I labour, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.” – Colossians 1:29
Though we labour with God’s energy and not our own, the Christian life is by no means passive. This is a binary truth which means that we need to understand both seemingly contradictory things in order to fully grasp this truth. If we just labour in our own strength, we won’t get anywhere. However, if we just wait for God’s energy to do everything for us and do nothing, we won’t get anywhere either. We need to be active, but it’s His energy with which we do it.
Paul affirms this need to press on in Philippians 3:12: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
In this sermon, Jilly takes us on a journey through scripture using practical examples to show us that there is no place for passivity in the Christian life, even in times of ‘waiting’. We are in a very real battle and even the command to ‘stand’ (Ephesians 6) is an active one.
Even to those who are hungry, thirsty, tired and weary Jesus said “come to me”. He expected them to actively make a move towards Him. To those who do this He promises to meet their needs in abundance.
Allow the Holy Spirit to bring these words of scripture to life as you listen to this sermon, and ask Him to help you to break free from passivity and to supply you with all the strength you need as you step out in obedience to His plans for your life.
